Pet Health: Ask the Kitty Guru Question: I am a sixteen week old male domestic shorthair. I have lots of energy and I love to play. One of my favorite games is to run and attack my person's feet and ankles with my teeth and claws. I know that she doesn't enjoy this game but I can't seem to help myself. Is there anything she can do to help me overcome this undesirable behavior? Answer: What you are describing is normal kitten play behavior, unfortunately most humans don't take pleasure in having their delicate skin mauled by roudy kittens. There are several things that your human can do to help you learn more appropriate behavior. First of all she should have you neutered as soon as possible (yes, you are old enough for this surgery). Male kittens do seem to endulge in more rough and tumble play than do females, and neutering should help decrease your aggressive tendencies. You must also have an appropriate outlet for your energy. Large well made catnip toys are great because you can safely attack them with your teeth and claws. Remember your behavior is normal, you just need to satisfy it in a more acceptable way. Another thing your person can do to help you with your excess energy is to incorporate nightly play sessions using an interactive "wand-like" kitty toy into your daily routine. This will serve several functions. First of all it helps you work off your excess energy. It is also beneficial to you mentally and physically, and it serves to strengthen the bond between you and your human. If none of these remedies work or only help somewhat, your person will need to resort to more drastic measures. She will need to get into the habit of carrying around a small squirt bottle and giving you a blast of water when you attack. Or if she doesn't want to always carry a water bottle around the house she can loudly clap her hands and say "No!" in a forceful manner when you attack her feet. She could also consider getting you a feline playmate in the form of another kitten or playful young adult. If she should opt to go this route she would want to be very careful to choose a kitten or cat that would appreciate rough play (not all do) and usually another male would work out best, as most females don't enjoy or endulge in rough wrestling type play. |
